During the 1980s

This text is about some tendencies in pedagogy and language pedagogy which took place during the 1980s and 1990s. These tendencies had a big influence on modern pedagogy. What are they?

First of all, an international professional network for culture pedagogy appeared. It became popular to exchange of views and works. In the 1990s people began to become interested in the cultural side of language teaching.

Second, language pedagogy and linguistics had a cultural turn. This meant a breakthrough for culture pedagogy as a new part of language pedagogy. The AILA’s world congress in Amsterdam in 1993 was very important. It had a special section ‘The cultural component in language teaching’. Interest in the cultural side of language teaching has spread to many countries around the world.

Third, the 1990s were very much characterised by internationalisation. There was an increase in study travel. There were exchange programmes for students. It was good for language teaching. The Internet helped a lot. People could communicate in many countries. Some students have got great opportunities of meeting students from other countries, either via student exchanges and school trips or via e-mail. I think it’s very good. In Yaroslavl there are exchange students programmes.

Another field was assessment. Some projects were undertaken in the USA and Europe. It was necessary to develop criteria for the evaluation of cultural competence. Language-teacher organisations in the USA and school authorities in Europe realized that it was necessary to clarify and regulate its content.
